What is EVAR?

Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The AAA is a bulge or swelling in the aorta, the main blood vessel that runs from the heart down through the chest and abdomen. If left untreated, this can lead to life-threatening internal bleeding.

When is EVAR used?

Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) is typically used to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). An AAA occurs when the wall of the aorta weakens, causing it to bulge outwards. EVAR is a minimally invasive procedure that helps to strengthen the aorta and prevent rupture.

What is the EVAR procedure?

EVAR is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, a small incision is made in each groin to provide access to the femoral arteries. A catheter is then inserted into these arteries and guided up into the aorta using real-time imaging.

Once the catheter is in place, a flexible tube called a stent graft is guided into the aorta and positioned within the aneurysm. The stent graft is then expanded, creating a new path for blood flow that bypasses the aneurysm, thereby preventing rupture.

The procedure typically takes 1-3 hours, and most patients can expect to stay in the hospital for one to two days following surgery. Recovery time at home is usually around 2-4 weeks.
