Surgical Associates, S.C., Central Wisconsin’s largest private surgical practice, announced the promotion of Michael Murphy from chief operating officer (COO) to chief executive officer (CEO), effective immediately. Murphy is the first employee to hold the position within the burgeoning surgical practice.

“The Surgical Associates Board of Directors recognized the need for this new role with the practice’s recent growth and planned expansion,” explained Dr. Steven Weiland, President. “After the launch of the new plastic surgery division and MedSpa, our practice’s surgical staff will include more than 20 providers.”

Murphy, a seasoned executive with extensive experience in health care administration, was appointed COO of Surgical Associates in 2011. Prior to joining Surgical Associates, he worked in various management and executive positions at Aspirus from 1999-2011. Murphy has two degrees in business administration: a bachelor’s from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and a master’s from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh.

“In his time as COO, Mike has shown a tremendous dedication to Surgical Associates and the patients we serve,” said Dr. Weiland. “His knowledge, experience and commitment to excellence will be instrumental in moving Surgical Associates forward.”

Outside of Surgical Associates, Murphy serves the Wausau community as board member for the Samoset Council, BSA and a WIAA (high school) basketball and soccer official.

“I am honored to be named the first Chief Executive Officer for Surgical Associates,” said Murphy. “I look forward to continuing the commitment of excellence in serving our patients, employees and physicians.”
