Dr. Jennine Larson Selected as Aspirus Health Foundation’s 2018 Physician Champion

WAUSAU, WI – Dr. Jennine Larson, of Surgical Associates, was honored as Aspirus Health Foundation’s 2018 Physician Champion at its “Partners in Health” donor appreciation event on Thursday, October 4.

The annual event celebrates the donors, volunteers and partners who support the Foundation’s work to promote health and strengthen the community. Physician and Community Partner Champions are also recognized at the event for their commitment to the health and well-being of people in north central Wisconsin. Dr. Larson received the recognition for her outstanding contributions to trauma care at Aspirus.

Dr. Larson has provided exceptional care to patients in the Wausau area for more than 10 years. As a fellowship-trained trauma and critical care surgeon, Dr. Larson has always been a vocal advocate in support of rural trauma, a historically underserved demographic. Rather than gravitating toward a major metropolitan area, Dr. Larson instead invested her unwavering dedication and vast skill to serve northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with three board certifications: General Surgery, Critical Care, and Neurocritical Care.

In her tenure at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, Dr. Larson has established and maintained Aspirus Wausau Hospital as an American College of Surgeons Level II Trauma Center, built a strong private general surgery practice, and leads the Aspirus Wound Clinic. Since the development of the Level II Trauma Center, the hospital has tripled its trauma patient intake.

As an accomplished and well-regarded general surgeon, Dr. Larson is frequently called upon to provide surgical care for her fellow physicians and their families. She is also known for her bedside manner, helping patients and their families find comfort in uncertain situations.

Beyond her duties at the hospital, Dr. Larson also teaches Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) to other trauma and general surgeons as well as emergency department physicians, and she serves as adjunct faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Madison medical school. In addition to this tireless work in the trenches of patient care and support of the next great generation of caregivers, Dr. Larson also finds herself in front of the camera, doing PSAs for local TV stations in support of helmet use during ski and snowboard season, to make the winter safer for everyone.

Asked about the future, Dr. Larson says, “An ideal world would be safe enough that I would do only general surgery. Until then, the Aspirus Trauma team and I will be there to help patients and families in need, when and where they need it most.”
