Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

Arm lift, also referred to as brachioplasty, is a procedure used to remove excess skin from the upper arm. The skin on the arms commonly loses its elasticity as a result of natural aging or rapid weight loss. Arm lift surgery tightens and tones the upper arms, restoring a youthful contour. Patients with excess fat on their arms may elect to have liposuction performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures for even more dramatic results.

Did you know?

Many patients, who had previously been fearful of wearing revealing clothing, or of raising their arms over their heads, report an increase in self-confidence following the procedure.

What should I expect during my arm lift procedure?

An arm lift involves a day surgical procedure and is performed under general anesthetic. Most people return to work within 7-10 days following the surgery.

What post-operative instructions will I need to follow after arm lift?

A pressure compression garment must be worn for a few weeks, which minimizes the bruising and swelling and helps produce an even contour. These garments can easily be worn under normal clothes. Heavy activities and sports should be avoided for one month.

Brazilian Butt Lift

Synthetic implants were for many years the primary way plastic surgeons enhanced the buttocks. A Brazilian butt lift is less invasive than traditional butt implants. This procedure utilizes your own excessive fat tissue from the areas such as the hips, waist, tummy, and thighs and uses it to add volume to the buttocks. The aesthetic results are fuller, shapelier buttocks and a thinner waist.

Did you know?

Last year, cosmetic surgeons across the country performed nearly 10,000 buttock augmentations, up from the approximately 8,500 done in 2012, according to new stats from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Am I a good candidate for Brazilian butt lift procedure?

If you are in good health and want to improve the appearance of your buttocks, trunk and lower body, you are an excellent candidate for a Brazilian butt lift. Common donor sites include the abdomen, back, or thighs.

What should I expect during Brazilian butt lift procedure?

Using liposuction-style techniques, the fat is harvested via tiny nicks in the skin. The fat is concentrated and cleaned. Small syringes are then used to inject, sculpt, and enhance the butt’s shape and size – using your very own body fat (no artificial materials)! Liposuction around the hips (‘love handles’) and thighs (‘saddle bags’) is used to further sculpt and highlight a more pleasing shape to the butt.

What post-operative instructions will I need to follow?

Most of the swelling and discoloration usually subsides in 6-8 weeks. You will need to avoid sitting on your backside for long periods of time for at least 2 weeks following a butt lift. You will also need to sleep on your abdomen or side at night for the first 4 weeks. This is to allow your body to form blood vessels in the transferred fat and prevent any unfavorable shape irregularities.

Carpal Tunnel Release

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition caused by compression of the arm’s median nerve inside a narrow passageway at the base of the hand known as the carpal tunnel.

Repetitive hand motions, injury to the wrist, health problems (such as rheumatoid arthritis or thyroid dysfunction) and fluid retention from pregnancy or menopause can be contributing factors in carpal tunnel syndrome.

Numbness or tingling fingers, especially at night, are indications of carpal tunnel syndrome. Other symptoms you can experience include burning pain and impaired hand function.

A surgery called carpal tunnel release is used to relieve pressure on the nerve and restore muscle strength.

Am I a good candidate for carpal tunnel release?

A diminished quality of life caused by tingling, numbness or other symptoms may make you a good candidate for carpal tunnel surgery. Additionally, if symptoms persist for more than six months and have not improved through nonsurgical treatments (e.g., anti-inflammatory medication, wrist splinting, or physical therapy), you should discuss surgical treatment options with your doctor.

What should I expect during the carpal tunnel release procedure?

There are two types of carpal tunnel surgical options:

  • Endoscopic surgery: Endoscopic surgery uses a thin, flexible tube containing a camera (endoscope). The endoscope is inserted into the wrist through a tiny incision. The camera guides the doctor as the surgery is performed with small tools inserted into the wrist through another small incision. During the procedure, the transverse carpal ligament is cut to alleviate pressure on the median nerve and relieve carpal tunnel symptoms. The smaller incisions allow for faster healing.
  • Traditional open surgery: The surgeon cuts open the wrist with a slightly larger incision at the base of the palm to access and divide the soft tissues between the skin and transverse carpal ligament.

Both carpal tunnel surgical options are typically outpatient procedures, which means no overnight stay at the hospital is required. Talk to your surgeon about which carpal tunnel release method is right for you.

What post-operative instructions will I need to follow?

Keep your hand/wrist elevated as best you can for a few days after surgery to minimize pain and swelling. Also, apply an ice pack to the palm side of the dressing (20 minutes on/off) for the first 24-48 hours as directed by your physician.

Unless instructed otherwise, resume normal activities gradually, but avoid pushing, pulling and lifting anything over five pounds until the wound heals.

Schedule a follow-up appointment 10-14 days following the surgery. Sutures will be removed at this time.

Fat Grafting

Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer, is a cosmetic procedure that allows your physician to remove fat cells from one part of your body, cleanse them, and then transfer them to another part of your body. This provides a fuller appearance using a completely natural solution.

What can fat grafting help?

Fat grafting is the perfect solution for those seeking fuller breasts or buttocks, with a very natural, soft appearance. It can also help fill lines and creases that have sunken in due to aging and weight loss. Fat grafting provides a more permanent solution than temporary fillers and can help to shape your body, improve the appearance of scars, and give you a more youthful appearance.

Fat Grafting for Breast Augmentation

Fat grafting is a great option for those seeking a moderate increase in breast size. If your breasts already have a nice size, shape, and skin tone, and you’re simply looking to give them a fuller appearance, this is likely a great procedure for you.

If your breasts are saggy or you have poor skin tone, a breast augmentation with fat grafting might be a better option. Your improved skin tone and breast shape will help the grafted fat better take.

Fat Grafting for Buttocks

The use of fat grafting for perkier, fuller buttocks is also known as a Brazilian butt lift. This used fat to provide you with a feminine, curvy appearance. Oftentimes liposuction is used to sculpt the surrounding areas and collect the fat that will be purified and transferred to your buttocks.

Fat Grafting for Facial Features

Crow’s feet, laugh lines, and worry lines. They’re signs of a life well lived, but can also be quite annoying. Fat grafting can help minimize skin depression, give your face a fuller, more youthful appearance, and minimize wrinkles.

Recovery From Fat Grafting

Although your recovery time will depend on your individual characteristics, most people are back to their normal routine within a month. However, physical activity is typically only restricted for the first couple of weeks. You’ll have minor scars that are usually hidden by clothing and undergarments. How well you will recover depends on your overall health, eating habits, and lifestyle. The more you rest and take care of yourself, the easier recovery will be.

Light-Life Body Reshaping Program

“Light-Life” is a comprehensive body reshaping program for patients who have experienced major weight loss.

After weight loss, there can be a significant amount of excess skin in the arms, abdomen, thighs or buttocks. This excess skin can cause uncomfortable chafing, making it difficult to fit in clothes, and it also serves as a reminder of the past.

The areas most affected by weight loss include:

  • Upper arms may sag and appear loose and full
  • Breasts may flatten and hang with nipples pointed downward
  • Abdominal area may extend around the sides and into the lower back area, resulting in an apron-like overhang
  • Buttocks, groin and thighs can sag and cause hanging pockets of skin

The Light-Life Program is designed for patients who have undergone significant weight loss. Surgical body contouring following major weight loss improves the shape and tone of your underlying tissue that supports fat and skin, and removes excess sagging fat and skin that cannot be eliminated solely with exercise. The result is a more normal appearance with smoother body contours. This is, in essence, the final and most rewarding phase of your total weight loss experience.

Light-Life Program offers all procedures associated with body contouring surgery and specializes in patients who have undergone significant weight loss. Procedures are customized to suit each individual’s needs.

The process of being evaluated for surgery can often be confusing with a myriad of surgical options and prices. The Light-Life Program is the right choice for any patient seeking body restoration at a reasonable cost.

Dr. Markelov’s specialist in both plastic surgery and bariatric surgery will ensure positive outcomes and satisfaction with your procedure.

TUMMY TUCK, also known as abdominoplasty, removes the excess skin and fat that hangs over your lower abdomen. It greatly improves your body shape and silhouette, as well as the fit of your clothes, and reduces the hygiene hassles associated with the overhanging drape of excess skin and fat. The abdominal wall is also tightened, and your belly button is placed in an appropriate position.

In addition to removing the excess skin and fat, other procedures may be added as required, including:

  • Surgical tightening of the abdominal muscles (plication)
  • Liposuction of excess fat elsewhere on the abdomen or waist
  • Repair of abdominal hernias
  • Excision of abdominal scars

The very best candidates for abdominoplasty are men or women who are generally in good health, but who are concerned about either loose skin or a large fat paunch over their abdomen, frequently with unsightly stretch marks.

BREAST LIFT, also known as mastopexy, raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. The lifting technique uses your own tissue to fill the gap and helps you obtain a full shape. An implant can be added to the procedure if requested. Sometimes the areola becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift will reduce this as well.

ARM LIFT, also referred to as brachioplasty, is a procedure used to remove excess skin in the upper arm. The skin in the arms commonly loses its elasticity as a result of natural aging or rapid weight loss. Arm lift surgery tightens and tones the upper arms, restoring a youthful contour. Patients with excess fat on their arms may elect to have liposuction performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures for even more dramatic results. Many patients, who had previously been fearful of wearing revealing clothing, or of raising their arms over their heads, report an increase in self-confidence following the procedure.

THIGH LIFT surgery reshapes the thighs by reducing excess hanging skin, and even fat, in some cases, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body. A thigh lift improves the overall contours of the thighs, and the fit of clothing and may be performed in combination with liposuction and other body contouring procedures.

This surgery results in a more flattering contour, making it easier to wear tighter-fitting clothes and swimming apparel, and allowing you to be more active and participate in everyday life. The procedures will improve your self-confidence and often the motivation and ability to exercise.

BUTTOCK LIFT offers a more youthful, pleasing appearance to the buttock by either removing loose skin and lifting the buttock into a higher position, or by filling up the loose skin (usually in the lower outer half of the buttock) with your own fat (fat transfer or “Brazilian butt lift”). Sometimes, both are necessary to produce optimal results. If fat transfer is used, the fat is taken from somewhere else on your body using liposuction, resulting in an improved contour in other parts of your body as well. Buttock lift can usually be performed as a day surgery or overnight stay procedure. Most people return to normal everyday activities and work within 3-4 weeks following surgery.

FAT REMOVAL (LIPOSUCTION) is the most effective surgical procedure to treat areas with excessive fat deposits. Liposuction is the most popular method of body contouring surgery because it allows the surgeon to re-sculpt specific areas of the body. Using only a few tiny incisions, your surgeon can target stubborn fat deposits and permanently remove fat cells from the area. There are many different methods of liposuction available, and Dr. Markelov will discuss which technique is right for you. Unlike other body contouring procedures, liposuction does not involve excess skin removal and is not an effective treatment for reducing cellulite.

Liposuction

We all have areas of our body that can be a little frustrating. No matter how many crunches or squats you do, there’s likely an area that you’ve tried to smooth out, but to no avail. Liposuction is a great choice for men and women who already live a healthy lifestyle that includes diet and exercise.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that is used to remove fat from parts of your body, including your thighs, belly, abdomen, and buttocks. This procedure helps with body contouring and is a good choice for individuals with more fat in certain areas of their body than others. Liposuction is not a weight loss solution. If you’re looking to lose weight, diet and exercise would be your best bet. After you reach your goal weight, liposuction could help give your body a smoother appearance.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction is a great option for men and women who live a generally healthy lifestyle. If you have good skin elasticity and tone, then your skin will shrink down once the fat is removed. Liposuction is not recommended for people with restricted blood flow, diabetes, or a poor immune system.

What should I expect?

You should expect a smoother, better-contoured appearance from liposuction, with minimal scarring. Your contouring should last for a long time as long as your weight remains stable.

Are there any risks?

As with all surgeries, there are some risks associated with liposuction. The healthier you are, the less likely you are to experience any adverse side effects. Potential problems can include fluid accumulation, contour irregularities, infection, and numbness. Choosing an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Markelov will help reduce the chance of anything going wrong.

Thigh Lift

Thigh lift surgery reshapes the thighs by reducing excess hanging skin, and even fat, in some cases, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body. A thigh lift improves the overall contours of the thighs, and the fit of clothing and may be performed in combination with liposuction and other body contouring procedures.

Did you know?

This surgery results in a more flattering contour, making it easier to wear tighter-fitting clothes and swimming apparel, and allowing you to be more active and participate in everyday life. The procedures will improve your self-confidence and often the motivation and ability to exercise.

What should I expect during thigh lift?

For inner thigh lift, incisions are made along the inner aspect of the thigh and/or in the groin crease. The surgery involves a general anaesthetic and might require a one-day stay in the hospital. Most people return to work within 2-3 weeks following the surgery.

What post-operative instructions will I need to follow after thigh lift?

A pressure compression garment must be worn for 4-6 weeks after the surgery, which minimizes the bruising and swelling and helps produce an even contour. This garment is similar to a girdle and can be worn under normal clothes. Heavy activities and sports should be avoided for 4-6 weeks.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Abdominoplasty – or tummy tuck – is a surgical procedure used to remove excess, unneeded or unwanted skin and fat from the abdomen. Most patients who undergo a tummy tuck at Surgical Associates achieve smoother, flatter and well-toned abdomens that are unachievable with diet and exercise alone. Many of the patients who select abdominoplasty are of a normal body weight, but have loose or sagging skin caused by genetics, aging, or certain life events like pregnancy or weight fluctuations.

Did you know?

Although a tummy tuck is an excellent solution for excising excess skin, it is no substitute for a nutritious diet and regular exercise. It is also not a solution for stretch-marks located above the belly button. Keep in mind that abdominoplasty results are long-lasting, but may be negated with future pregnancies. If you plan to have one or more children in the future, speak with your doctor about delaying your procedure.

Am I a candidate for a tummy tuck procedure?

You may be a candidate for a tummy tuck if you are a non-smoker with excess abdominal skin – perhaps due to significant weight loss or pregnancy – and you are currently at a stable weight. You’ll also need a pre-surgical consultation to ensure that you have realistic expectations of your outcome.

What should I expect during my abdominoplasty procedure?

You’ll prepare for your abdominoplasty with lab work and pre-operative instructions that may prevent you from taking certain medications leading up to your surgery or eating and drinking on the day of the procedure. Your doctor will administer IV sedation or general anesthesia at the start of the procedure for your comfort. A horizontal incision will be made along your pubic hairline, where the excess fat, skin and tissues are removed. The abdominal muscles are sutured and repaired before the incision is finally closed and sutured shut.

What post-operative instructions will I need to follow?

Swelling is normal following a tummy tuck, so your final results will not be visible until several weeks after the procedure. When you awake, you’ll be wearing compression garments to support healing and reduce swelling. You’ll be instructed to avoid certain physical activity in the weeks following your procedure. Your doctor will give you personalized instructions for at-home care and schedule return visits to your surgeon’s office to monitor your progress and remove bandages and stitches.
