The thyroid is a gland at the bottom of the neck that, while small in size, has an enormous impact on health and well-being. It helps regulate cellular metabolism, affecting weight gain/loss, temperature, blood pressure, as well as how fast the heart beats. The parathyroid glands sit next to the thyroid and produce a hormone responsible for regulating calcium levels in the bloodstream, supporting the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems. Most don’t think about these glands when they’re working properly, but the onset of a disorder can profoundly affect overall health.

Personalized Support Through Patient Navigation
Surgical Associates’ Thyroid and Parathyroid Program pairs a nurse navigator with every patient so they feel confident and informed throughout their treatment journey. The nurse navigator is a patient’s advocate and liaison between him or her and all components of care.
Specializing in thyroid care, the nurse navigator:
- Educates and guides
- Schedules and coordinates care
- Helps answer questions and handle paperwork
- Offers compassionate, one-on-one support
- Coordinates transportation and financial counseling, if needed
For the entirety of their treatment, patients will have the same nurse navigator handling the details so they can focus on recovery.
Advanced, Non-Surgical Treatment of Thyroid Nodules
Among the services offered through the Thyroid and Parathyroid Program is the pioneering treatment known as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), a non-surgical option that addresses benign nodules while preserving thyroid function. While surgery or radioactive iodine have been traditional treatment options for benign thyroid nodules, many patients express a desire for a minimally invasive alternative such as RFA.
The office-based procedure typically shrinks the thyroid nodule by 60-80% over the course of a year and often does not require the patient to take thyroid hormone replacement medication.
