Director – Hospital Services

SUMMARY

The Director of Hospital Services is a versed APP who will provide leadership and direction to all Surgical Associates hospital service lines in addition to providing patient care in collaboration with a BC internist/BC Surgeon.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Leadership

  1. Provides administrative oversight and direction and manages the strategic planning, marketing, operational activities, and administrative functions of Surgical Associates hospital services lines.
  2. Oversees clinical direction and education of Surgical Associates hospital services.
  3. Directs Surgical Associates hospital service lines, including hiring, evaluation, coaching, mentoring, and professional growth and development of hospital-based staff.
  4. Ensures clinical competency and adherence to hospital and surgical policy through practice analysis and case review of hospital staff with team leads and physicians.
  5. Investigates and responds to patient/family/staff complaints about hospital-based staff.
  6. Participates as a representative in hospital-wide committees/programs
  7. Ensures all operational mandates and initiatives are completed (CME requirements/office quality CME, ACLS/ATLS, etc.)
  8. Reviews and participates in financial planning and issues for hospital service lines.
  9. Investigate and resolve hospital operational issues.
  10. Directs Surgical Associates hospital quality improvement/process improvement programs.
  11. Ensures compliance and participates in Medical Staff Services initiatives, policies, and procedures.
  12. Maintains knowledge of and advocates for practice models that allow hospital-based staff to practice to the fullest extent of their scope of practice.
  13. Collaborates with CEO/operations in regard to funding/billing/reimbursement models.
  14. Assists and supports Medical Directors, Acute care, Trauma, and Vascular programs
  15. Directs metric program/bonus program as applicable for hospital-based employees.
  16. Assists CEO with hospital quarterly provider meetings.

 

Clinical

  1. Practices as hospital-based advanced practice providers within hospital service lines.
  2. Analyzes, interprets, and evaluates subjective and objective findings to develop an assessment in order to initiate a treatment plan or referral to the appropriate physician or provider.
  3. Performs routine duties such as providing first aid care, wound care, suturing minor wounds and lacerations, suture removal, incision and drainage procedures, simple procedures, and collaborates/consults with the physician.
  4. Develop a plan of care based upon assessment, which includes prescribing appropriate medications and treatments, providing follow-up care, and evaluating the effectiveness of care.
  5. Provides patient education in outreach clinics regarding medications, treatments, anticipates outcomes, and referrals.
  6. Conducts Clinic rounds with Vascular, Trauma, and Acute Care attending physicians daily
  7. Afternoon rounds may be independent, but MD updates are expected
  8. Provides appropriate documentation in the medical chart.
  9. Acts as first assistant in OR to surgeon.

Call coverage and work on holidays may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Credentials are required.
  • A Masters Degree in Science, in Nursing or Physician Assistant studies is required.
  • Certification by the State of WI of Nursing or Licensure of Physician Assistant Medical Board of the State of Wisconsin is required.
  • APP who has practiced in a critical care setting for 3+ years is preferred.
  • Prior experience in ACS, Trauma, Vascular surgery, and critical care is strongly preferred.
  • Prior administrative and leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience with Epic software is preferred. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES – COMPETENCIES

  • Possesses advanced knowledge of professional nursing and basic medical theory and practice.
  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of the Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant guidelines, rules, regulations, and policies of the health care facility.
  • Demonstrates the ability to discriminate between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Understands HIPAA and state confidentiality laws and holds staff accountable for maintaining patient privacy.
  • Possesses the ability to follow patients through periods of illness in an independent or collaborative relationship with a physician.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Possesses strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Models a professional disposition and communication style.
  • Specific safety certification/recertification may be required per the organization. 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT

The nature of the job requires standing and sitting for periods of time. While performing the essential functions of the job, one may frequently bend/stoop and occasionally squat, reach above the shoulder, crouch, or push/pull. Some lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs may be required. The use of hands for repetitive, simple grasping and firm grasping is required. While performing the job, one will encounter close paperwork, use of computer monitor/equipment, and visual monotony. Hearing must be utilized for continuous conversations, equipment monitoring, telephone use, background noise, and occasional transcription. Frequent stress may occur. The job requires continuous independent decision-making.
